How exciting to have my dear friend and teacher, David Winston, here in the Charlottesville area. This spectacular weekend event will be held at Farfields Farm in Afton, Virginia and is home to one the most beautiful working herb farm venues I have ever seen.
Not only will you receive the teachings of David, but the staff at Farfields (Sacred Plant Grads, just saying ) will be giving tours during the weekend of their processing and drying facilities. This is a farm/home scale model that is very inspiring.

Saturday, June 7
Saturday morning, we will be in Fairfield’s medicine garden then head into the gorgeous Nautilus classroom that sits on top of the property with stunning views for these classes.
Saturday afternoon:
DIFFERENTIAL TREATMENT OF DEPRESSION AND ANXIETY WITH BOTANICAL AND NUTRITIONAL MEDICINES
Over the past 5 years, the world has dealt with a major pandemic, economic chaos, political instability, climate change and environmental disasters, wars, famine and a host of other challenges and threats.I t seems we are all on a hair trigger, just waiting for the next crisis. It is no wonder that the percentage of people reporting feelings of anxiety has spiked in the last several years. We can try to ignore the outside turmoil, but it has a way of finding us and sometime, deep breathing, medication, another stress reduction techniques are simply not enough.

From an herbalists perspective we understand that impaired mental health is more than an imbalance of neurochemicals and in this class we will discuss the more than 14 underlying causes of depression (inflammation-induced depression, GI -based depression, blood sugar dysregulation-induced depression, hormonal depression, etc) and 11 causes of anxiety, (thyroid-induced anxiety, GI-induced anxiety, old-age induced anxiety, etc) and how mild to moderate cases can be often be effectively helped using the appropriate herbs. The common misconception that St. Johns wort or any one herb is “the depression herb” is untrue and we will look at the specific indications of emotional dysfunction and the specific remedies to treat them.
Sunday, June 8

ADAPTOGENS, HERBS FOR STRENGTH, STAMINA AND STRESS RELIEF
In our modern world we live incredibly busy and stress filled lives. Chronic stress and the resultant elevation of stress hormones such as cortisol have been shown to be an initiator and cofactor for much of our chronic degenerative disease. In addition to stress reduction techniques, healthy relationships, a good diet and adequate sleep, another important method for reducing stress and enhancing health is the use of adaptogenic herbs.
In this class we discuss the definition of adaptogens, what is and is not an adaptogen, how these herbs work, the rational and effective clinical use of the different adaptogenic herbs and the unique qualities of each herb. Adaptogens are not a one size fits all therapy. There are stimulating adaptogens, calming adaptogens, warming or cooling adaptogens, nourishing adaptogens and moistening or drying adaptogens. Knowing their unique qualities allows the practitioner to more effectively utilize these herbs and get better clinical results.
The appropriate use of these botanicals can improve endocrine, nervous system, immune, reproductive, gastro-intestinal and cardiovascular function and promote increased mental and physical well being.

MEDICINE OF THE SOUL: THE RITUAL USE OF PLANTS
Herbs can be used not only as physical medicines, but ritual medicines as well. In this class we will explore the ceremonial use of herbs in various religions, indigenous and traditional cultures. Herbs have been used for millennia and are still used as incense, baths, ritual foods, amulets, teas, entheogens and paints to help grow our spirits, heal our souls, make congregations holy, improve our luck and protect us from malign influences. Often dismissed as superstition, the almost universal use of these spiritual medicines strongly suggests they offer real and powerful benefits especially in our crazy, confusing and anxiety producing world.
