OWNING and UNDERSTANDING
Sunday, March 26 10am – 5pm
In this workshop white people will focus on healing ourselves and healing our world, owning our white privilege and reclaiming whiteness from white supremacy. Utilizing an integrated heart/spirit/mind approach to understanding and dismantling privilege, the workshop will include group discussion, social justice action step planning, role playing, and much more.
Herbal teas will be provided. We will have a working lunch, so please pack your lunch. You’re also encouraged to bring snacks/refreshments to share if you’re able.
I, Archana A. Pathak, Ph.D. am a scholar activist committed to visioning, creating and sustaining a just, inclusive world. Academically trained in Culture and Communication, I frame my workshops around the stories that we tell and are told about identity and privilege. I have done diversity and social justice work for over 20 years. As a postcolonial feminist, my integrated approach explores the ways in which we can be the change we wish to see in the world by fully exploring how systems of oppression function and building skills to disrupt and dismantle those systems. Utilizing scholarly and community justice models, I explore the ways in which critical self-reflexivity begins and centers a journey of transformative social change. I serve as faculty in the Department of Gender, Sexuality & Women’s Studies, affiliate faculty in the Department of African American Studies and the Media, Art & Text Interdisciplinary Doctoral Program at Virginia Commonwealth University. I am also currently serving as a Faculty Fellow in VCU’s Division of Inclusive Excellence
Fee is $40.
